A DAY IN THE LIFE

Anita Jones

I’ve been working for Norwich City Council for 5 years as an Environmental Health Officer and I can honestly say that no day has been the same. To be stuck behind a desk all day is not my cup of tea, I like to be out and about meeting people from different backgrounds and work sometimes as part of a ‘team’ depending on the project in hand.

My work takes me to all sorts Of venues including pet shops, tattoo studios, funeral parlours and retail stores. I carry out inspections and gain great job satisfaction from advising employers and help them to sort out their sometimes complex health and safety challenges. In my first year my ‘experiences’ included inclusion on a Police raid, numerous accident investigations and lots of training courses geared to improving my job knowledge.

Five years on I still enjoy my job which has fun and sad occasions, but that just reflects life, I enjoy a great salary and generous annual holiday allowance with flexible working hours and lots of job satisfaction.
I would recommend a career in Environmental Health to anyone who seeks adventure and challenges where no day is the same and you really have the chance to ‘make a difference’.
